Aquarium Lighting
Online calculator for approximate calculation of lamp power in an aquarium.
If you only have fish in your aquarium, such as African cichlids, and no live plants, it's simple. You only need light for convenience. Of course, don't go overboard with a 1000W arc lamp from a nearby parking lot just because it was cheap.
Fish don't need too bright lighting - it will only cause stress, leading to diseases and other problems. Usually, the lamp included with the aquarium is sufficient. You can use a lamp with any spectrum. Lamps with a lot of blue light in the spectrum highlight the fish's color due to "glow" of fish scales (though whether this color is natural?) - for example, in an aquarium with African cichlids - pseudotropheus, aulonocara, etc., you can use a lamp with actinic light - the blue color of the fish will look very beautiful. In general, the choice of lamp is determined by your taste, and the choice of power by this calculator.
