Column Multiplication

Written Multiplication — is digit-by-digit multiplication. Each digit of the second multiplier is multiplied by the first multiplier as a single-digit number. In the step-by-step (digit-by-digit) multiplication, the first digit falls into the column of the digit of the second multiplier that is being multiplied.

Rule

In long multiplication, two multipliers are arranged one below the other so that the digits of the numbers (are in the same column). On the left, a sign is placed «x».
If one or both of the multipliers end in zeros, the numbers are written so that the significant figures of the smallest digit are in the same column. Zeros are carried into the product and are not entered in the field of step-by-step products.
Step-by-step (digit-by-digit) products are summed by digits, and the result is written under the line. A sign is placed to the left of the product terms «+».
