Το συνημίτονο της γωνίας είναι μία από τις τριγωνομετρικές συναρτήσεις. Είναι η αναλογία της παρακείμενης πλευράς του ορθογωνίου τριγώνου προς την υποτείνουσα. Γράφεται ως εξής: cos (Α) = AC/AB, όπου AC – παρακείμενη πλευρά της γωνίας (Α), AB – υποτείνουσα.
Γιατί είναι απαραίτητο να πραγματοποιηθούν τόσο περίπλοκοι υπολογισμοί με την πρώτη ματιά? Από την αρχαιότητα, είναι γνωστή η αξίωμα: γνωρίζω τη γωνία – γνωρίζω την τριγωνομετρική της συνάρτηση. Αντίστοιχα, αν η cos γωνία είναι γνωστή, αυτή η γωνία μπορεί να βρεθεί στους πίνακες Μπράντις. Αντιστρόφως, – γνωρίζοντας τη γωνία, είναι εύκολο να υπολογιστεί το συνημίτονο. Από αυτό, μπορεί να βρεθούν τα εξής δεδομένα: το μήκος των πλευρών και της υποτείνουσας.
Αυτά τα δεδομένα χρησιμοποιούνται όχι μόνο σε γυμνά μαθηματικά υπολογισμούς. Είναι αδύνατο να σχεδιαστεί ακόμη και ένα στοιχειώδες σχέδιο της περιοχής χωρίς να γνωρίζουμε τις τριγωνομετρικές συναρτήσεις. Χρησιμοποιώντας έναν online υπολογιστή, η εργασία μπορεί να απλοποιηθεί και τα απαιτούμενα δεδομένα να αποκτηθούν σε δευτερόλεπτα.
